In November sales dropped month by month, relative to solid sales in October, but the passenger car segment continues to rise at a rate of 9% year by year. Tata saw a year-on-year increase of more than 100% in its individual results while other performers including Kia, Honda, and MG saw solid growth. Maruti Suzuki saw 2% decline in sales over the year and 17% decline per month, while the number of best-selling vehicles in the country continues to be dominated by cars. In November, let’s dig at the best performers.

  • The top five continue to be locked by Maruti Quick, Wagon R, Alto and Dzire
  • In 6th, Kia Sonet moves out of Hyundai creta and gets seventh places with Creta
  • Maruti Ertiga enters the list as the Vitara Brezza is gone.

Maruti Swift (18,498 units)

Maruti Swift remains the best-selling car in India with 18,498 units sold in November 2020 amid a sharp decrease in sales over the last month. The month’s success improved the cumulative sales of Maruti’s famous hatchback in the period April-November 2020 to 95,382 units.

Currently in its third generation, the Maruti Swift is available in a range of four trim levels – LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ and the company’s tried-and-tested 1.2-litre K12 petrol engine. Gearbox variants include a standard 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT version is also available for all but the basic model.

Maruti Baleno (17,872 units)

With 17,872 units shifted in the month of November 2020, Maruti Baleno remained second in the best-seller list though at the same time closing the Swift gap.

A competitor to the recent Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza – supplied to Toyota by Maruti – A variety of peppy and frugal engines, the Baleno offers a comfortable interior and is the only car in Maruti’s range to have a CVT gearbox option. Buyers have two engine choices to pick from a venerable 83hp 1.2-litre petrol or a more powerful 90hp 1.2-litre Dual Jet engine fitted with mild-hybrid technology.

Maruti Wagon R (16,256 units)

The Maruti Wagon R ranks at number three with 16,256 units recorded, just 935 units cutting out the Alto.  The new generation of Maruti’s tall-boy hatchback continues to do well on the market, with a reputation of being a responsive, spacious, powerful and affordable city car.

Accessible with a range of petrol engines, the third generation Wagon R is against the Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago, 1.0-liter K10 petrol and 1.2-liter petrol K12 and the fine equipped CNG variant on the former.

Maruti Alto (15,321 units)

The Maruti Alto is reduced to the 4th position in the sales list for a second month running. Maruti has been one of the top selling carmakers’ items for a long time, and has recently finished on the Indian market for the last two decades.

The strength of this long-term hatchback lies in its peace of mind and its affordable pricing experience, but newer entrants have more to offer.

Maruti Dzire (13,536 units)

The Maruti Dzire has long been the only sedan to be included on the list in the compact category of sedan and is struggling against competition from Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura. The Dzire rounds off with combined revenue of 13,536 units the country’s top five best sales cars – an unchanged ranking ironically since last month.

Earlier this year before COVID-19 based lockdowns; The Dzire received a mid-cycle upgrade. The redesign has resulted in small style improvements, an improved service list and a powerful 1.2-liter dual-jet engine with 90 hp – but there is no mild hybrid technology available here.

The Hyundai Creta, the second-generation industry, soon came out from the Kia Seltos rivalry and its previous generation took over as the best-selling medium-size SUV on the market. The Creta has retained its spot on the chart with its sales of 12,017 units in the month of November 2020.

Hyundai Creta (12,017 units)

The Creta has a choice between two petrol engines – a natural aspirator of 1.5 litre of petrol, a 1.4 litre of turbo-petrol, and a 1.5 litre diesel engine. Each engine has its own special automatic gearbox option, although the fully-loaded SUV is expensive and styling very polarising. The Creta is available in a wide variety of versions and engine gearbox configurations.

Kia Sonet (11,417 units)

The Kia Sonet has helped Kia to boost its overall revenue by 50% in November 2020 over the period of the previous year. With sales of 11,417 units, the Sonet figures are already good enough to push it up to seven by three places as compared to October.

The third month after the new Sonet sold out its larger sibling, the Seltos, to the market. The Sonet sold the 9,079 units of the 9,079 units of the Seltos in September and the Sonet clocked 11,721, compared with the 8,900 units of the Seltos in October.

Maruti Eeco (11,183 units)

Utilitarian as it can be, the Eeco is the most economical way to travel up to 7 people from A to B in India. With no direct rival, the Eeco sold 11,183 units in the month of November, putting only 234 units behind the Sonet in the list “as reported by autocarindia.com”.
