Hyundai i20 2020 launched first look: Things to know

Hyundai i20 2020 has been finally released in India at 6.79 lakh.

The latest i20 from Hyundai provides a mile-long list of improvements, updates and enhancements-from how it looks to the engine choices, acceleration, features and parking.

Hyundai i20 2020 was released officially in India for €6.89 lakh (ex-showroom, pan India, introductory) at a starting price. It’s one of the biggest releases of the year, both for Hyundai and the Indian automotive industry, because of the success that luxury hatchbacks are seeing again, and because of the thousands-long list of changes and improvements to this particular model.

From looking at the engine choices and the transmission to a multitude of features integrated to refresh the challenge that the car is trying to re-engineer since it was first introduced here back in 2008, the i20 is seeking to rule its market with the utmost authority.

Hyundai’s ‘Sensual Sportiness’ was a style concept that underpinned how much of its newer vehicles look from the outside. And while the latest i20 is every bit sporty to look at, there is an underlying style that is abundantly obvious at first and every subsequent glance.

The new front grille-Hyundai describes it as the Parametric Jewel pattern grid-seems to be completely fresh and trendy on the car and is flanked on either side by catchy LED headlamps that come with the i20 branding. Sitting under these are projector fog lamps in a D-shaped housing that adds to the aesthetic and functional appeal.

The car on the show by Hyundai was a Turbo model and hence the red and black paint themes accentuated the very athletic front fascia even further. Straight flowing character lines on the bonnet provide meaning to the vehicle, and these drops sweep into the grid, without ever meeting.

Tippy-toe to the side and the same sense of appearance, plus ample doses of sporty character and sporting appeal. Highlights here are the R16 diamond-cut alloys-almost identical to those seen in Verna 2020, the chrome door handles, the Flyback chrome belt pattern, the large quarter-back glass on the C-pill and the blackened side sill adorned with another i20 brand badge.

Maybe the rear is where the most visible improvements in the style occur. This may be due to the radical appearance of the all-new z-formed tail light, especially when illuminated and the link of a chrome beltline on both sides. A reflector at the top and two at the bottom on both sides, over the black platform and a profile.

It seems that extra time has been spent on making sure that the new i20’s cabin configuration is not only usable and doesn’t only offer priority-as it does-but clearly emphasises the space.

The minor changes in width and wheelbase may be slight, but the improvement in the internal space quotient, especially on the rear, is obvious. The legroom for passengers in the backrest has improved with a good knee, head, and bottom brackets. The windows are wide enough, while the i20 features an electric one-touch sunroof. The sunroof is only the highlight feature here

The latest i20 is the first industry-leading Oxyboost air purifier, a 10.25-inch HD navigation touchscreen infotainment, a 7-speaker sound system, a blue-colored ambient light, wireless phone charging with cooling pads and a large digital TFT monitor cluster. The BlueLink technology of Hyundai also takes its first location in the i20.

The cabin itself is well built, particularly evident from the perspective of the dashboard, with an emphasis on horizontal geometrics. Several USB and 12V charging stations, storage rooms, and a rear AC ventilation unit add convenience to this and over 300 liters of space may be needless to bundle.


Hyundai i20 2020 will now have a turbo petrol of 1.0 litres, and it is, frankly, no surprise given that the engine has been so popular with other companies’ goods. It is a DCT or iMT transmission machine option. Then there is a 1.2 litre petrol engine known as Kappa which has been mating to either IVT or a manual 5-speed transmission unit.



The latest i20 is using 66 percent high-strength steel to maximise its crash-sureness, and Hyundai points out it has paid more attention to the safety issue than ever. The top six airbags, vehicle stability monitoring, electronic stability control, Hill Assist Control, and rear parking camera are other highlights on this front.

The latest i20 seems to be a sturdy bundle on paper, rather than on stage. It gains power and adds strength by thoroughly upgrading its appearance, adding improvements and providing a variety of motor and transmission features. It’s also a boon to have more space.
